Storage Hound is a home inventory service: you photograph your boxes, AI lists what's inside, and search finds anything later. This policy explains what we collect, where your data lives, and the choices you have.
The short version
- Only you can see your boxes. We never sell your data, show ads, or use ad trackers.
- Your boxes are hosted for you on every plan, including the free one, and sync across your devices. You can also keep copies in your own OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud.
- AI photo analysis sends the photo to Anthropic, our AI provider, to identify items. We don't keep the photo for analysis, and it is never used for advertising.
- Export or delete everything anytime.
- Payments go through a payment processor. We never see or store your full card number.
What we collect
- Your inventory: box numbers and names, item lists, notes, photos, and photo captions.
- Account details: your email address and how you sign in (Sign in with Apple or Google, or an emailed sign-in link). We don't store passwords.
- Plan details: which plan you're on, its status, and renewal date, provided by our payment processor.
- Technical data: a random identifier used to prevent abuse of the AI service, and basic security logs (such as sign-in times), kept only as long as needed for security.
We don't collect your contacts, track your location, or use analytics or advertising trackers.
Where your data lives
- Hosted by us. Every account, free or paid, stores its boxes and photos with our hosting providers so they sync across your devices. A copy is also kept in your browser so the app opens quickly and works offline; signing out removes that copy from the device. Your data is private to your account: access controls keep it separate from every other user's, it is encrypted in transit and at rest, and photos are reached only through private links that expire.
- Your own cloud storage. If you connect OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive or iCloud, Storage Hound saves and reads your backups there. Where the provider allows it, we only access the folder Storage Hound creates. You can disconnect at any time, and that provider's privacy policy applies to files stored with them.
Camera, photos, and location
Storage Hound asks for camera and photo access only so you can add photos to a box. Phone photos often contain the location where they were taken; the web app re-saves photos without that embedded location data before they are stored or analyzed.
AI photo analysis
When you analyze a photo, it is sent through our server (a Cloudflare Worker) to Anthropic's API, and the item list comes back to you. Our server holds the API key and enforces usage limits; it does not store your photos or item lists. Under Anthropic's commercial terms, data sent through its API is not used to train its models by default; see Anthropic's privacy policy. Nothing is analyzed unless you add a photo and ask for analysis. (Apps that let you add your own Anthropic API key send photos directly to Anthropic instead.)
Payments
Paid plans are billed through a payment processor (and through Apple or Google when purchased in their app stores). The processor handles your card details; we receive only what's needed to manage your plan, such as its status and renewal date. If a paid plan ends, your boxes stay available for you to view and export, and we won't delete them without telling you first.
How we use your data
To run Storage Hound: storing and syncing your boxes, analyzing photos you submit, managing your plan, answering support requests, and keeping the service secure. We don't use your data for advertising or profiling, and we never sell it.
Who we share it with
Only the providers that help run the service — hosting, AI analysis (Anthropic), payments, and email delivery — and only as needed for them to do that work. We may also disclose data if the law requires it. If Storage Hound is ever sold or merged, this policy's protections continue to apply to your data, and we'll tell you beforehand.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep hosted data while your account is open. You can export everything (CSV with photos, or a full backup) and delete your account at any time; when you do, we remove your boxes, photos, and account details from our systems, including backups, within 30 days.
Security
Accounts are kept separate with access controls, data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and access by anyone working on Storage Hound is limited to what's needed to run and support the service. No system is perfectly secure; if we learn of a breach affecting your data, we'll notify you promptly.
Your rights
You can access, correct, export, or delete your data at any time, in the app or by emailing us. Depending on where you live (for example, under GDPR in the EU/UK or CCPA in California) you may have additional rights; we honor those requests for everyone.
Children's privacy
Storage Hound is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We'll post any changes here and update the date above. For significant changes, we'll also let you know in the app or by email before they take effect.
